Mulberry Leaves Extract: An All-Natural “Carb Blocker” for Weight loss

When it comes to weight loss supplements, it feels like there's an almost endless array of options.

Things like Green Tea Extract, Thermogenic Fat Burners, and L-Carnitine are just a few choices people have. And that's not even counting prescription weight loss drugs like Orlistat, Liraglutide, or Phentermine.

But there's one common thread with most of these supplements or drugs: they're designed to help people lose weight, but not necessarily keep that weight off. That's what makes this all-natural answer so special.

But before we talk about this carb blocker supplement, we first have to understand some ideas around why so many people struggle to lose weight or keep it off.

The Problem With “Fast Carbs”

“Calories in, calories out” is a popular saying around weight loss. Unfortunately, there's an issue with that:

Not all calories are created equal.

Our bodies digest a calorie of protein, carbohydrates, and fat in very different ways. Plus, carbohydrates can come in different forms, such as “fast carbs” and “slow carbs”.

For example, foods that have a high Glycemic Index (GI) are rapidly broken down and absorbed. These carbs are often called “fast carbs”, and can include things like white bread, sodas, and even breakfast bars.


On the other hand, foods with a lower GI are more slowly digested, releasing their energy over a longer period of time. Unsurprisingly, these are called “slow carbs”.

“Fast carbs” are great for a short-term energy boost…

But if we don't use all the energy they provide (which unless we're doing something intense, like running a marathon or hiking all day), any excess energy gets stored as fat…

And as a result of these energy highs, a “sugar crash” can often follow. Plus, the blood sugar spikes that fast carbs cause can also increase the risk of conditions like Type 2 Diabetes over time.

Naturally, the obvious way to avoid the dangers of these carbs is to just give them up entirely. However, many otherwise healthy foods fall into this category… plus, who wants to never eat their favorite foods again!

But with this all-natural answer, we don't have to.

Mulberry leaves extract (supplement): The Answer To “Fast Carb” Fat

Made from white mulberry leaves, Mulberry leaves (supplement) is a safe, all-natural extract that does something quite incredible:

Turns “fast” sugars and carbs into “slow” ones.

In other words, it lowers the blood sugar spike that occurs when high GI foods are eaten. It does this by “blocking” an enzyme that helps digest carbs so they just pass without ever being absorbed by the body.

One of the key substances that does this is called 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), which is an “alpha-glucosidase inhibitor” (because that's the enzyme that helps break down carbs into glucose).

Along with this, there's a flow-on effect from lowering blood sugar surges when eating carbs: Mulberry leaves (supplement) helps to keep insulin levels lower too.


That's important, because insulin helps convert that blood sugar into energy… and also signals to the liver to store blood sugar for future use. From there, unused blood sugar often gets stored as fat.

This 2021 study shows Mulberry leaves (supplement) in action. 38 participants were either given 75g of sucrose (a simple, rapidly-digested sugar) or 75g of sucrose with white mulberry leaf extract. These were the results:

Both blood sugar and insulin levels in the placebo group (the red line in both charts) soared above the group taking the Mulberry leaves (supplement), which at one point was 42% lower.

Simply put, that's a LOT less carbs being absorbed by the body and stored as fat!

This mechanism that's different to so many weight loss supplements is what makes Mulberry leaves extract (supplement) so powerful. It doesn't just help people lose weight, but also minimize the impacts of a blood sugar-spiking meal or snack that would end up as fat.

Now, at CoBionic, we wanted to study "the magical herb - Mulberry leaves" ourselves. This is the first from a series of studies.

STEPS -

Consumption of Americas' beloved latte "Frappuccino" without taking the Mulberry Leaves Extract and tracking the glucose level at regular intervals after the latte consumption.

Then

Consumption of Frappuccino after taking the Mulberry Leaves Extract supplement and tracking the glucose level at regular intervals after the latte consumption.

RESULTS -

The sugar level was almost 35% lower than without Mulberry leaves extract supplement.

The test was conducted after a period of fasting and no additional sweeteners were added. Sugar levels were measured with a True Metrix Diabetes Fingerstick Tests.

Other Health Benefits With Mulberry Leaves Extract

While lowering blood sugar (and slashing carbs being stored as fat) may be the obvious benefit of Mulberry leaves extract (supplement), it's not the only one. Because it's a water extract of White Mulberry, people who regularly take it may start noticing some of these other health benefits…

May Help Weight Loss In Another Way

Most of the fat we store and try to get rid of is what's called “white adipose tissue”, or white fat. But there's actually another type: brown fat. Unlike white fat, our body only holds a small amount of brown fat, but it's what this type of fat actually does that's incredible.

In short, brown fat helps our body burn off white fat by having a thermogenic effect (i.e. it helps the body burn more energy). This in turn reduces the amount of energy from carbs that get converted into fat AND can help burn off fat already stored.

What's this got to do with Mulberry leaves extract (supplement)? Early studies indicate that Mulberry leaves may help with weight loss not just by lowering blood sugar, but also promoting the production of “bad fat burning” brown fat in the body.

White Mulberry has shown signs that it may lower cholesterol levels when taken repeatedly over a number of weeks. One animal study found results were happening in as little as two weeks.

Does Mulberry Leaves Extract (supplement) Have Any Side Effects?

The short answer is NO, it's unlikely to have side effects.

Reason #1: When taken, Mulberry leaves extract (supplement) stays ‘unaltered'. That means it gets absorbed into the bloodstream, goes to the kidneys, and is then excreted intact.

Reason #2: Mulberry leaves extract (supplement) does NOT impair normal glucose metabolism, which makes it safer to alternatives that might.

On a practical level, a 2017 study watched for side effects in a trial involving the use of Mulberry leaves extract (supplement). They observed that although participants did report issues, they weren't any more common than what those on the placebo reported. In some cases, the placebo group reported higher side effects than those taking Mulberry leaves extract (supplement)!
